About NFCSN

“In the scientific relation of God to man, we find that whatever blesses one blesses all, as Jesus showed with the loaves and the fishes, — Spirit, not matter, being the source of supply.”

– Mary Baker Eddy

Our Mission

The mission of the National Fund for Christian Science Nursing is to gather, bless, and offer resources that support the healing ministry of Christian Science nursing.

NFCSN Objectives

  • Reduce instances of Christian Scientists going without Christian Science nursing due to lack of funds.
  • Promote Christ-healing without resorting to a societal model of healthcare or its financing.
  • Promote the awareness of the healing ministry of the Christian Science nurse.
  • Increase the potential for greater availability, accessibility, and activity of Christian Science nurses.

NFCSN History

1970s - 2000s
Early Beginnings

The idea of creating a fund to help Christian Scientists pay for Christian Science nursing care dates back to the 1960s. We have records of one of our Board members inquiring about this, seeking help from The Mother Church. Others have told us this idea was raised from time to time at Christian Science facility conferences. In 2012, a group of forward thinkers launched a nonprofit corporation for this purpose in California though it didn’t take any concrete steps at that time.

February 2014
Boston Meeting

In February 2014, The Mother Church hosted a meeting to discuss the sustainability of Christian Science nursing and ask questions about how to best support the simplicity of Christian healing. From this, the Financial Sustainability of Christian Science Nursing committee — and a collaborative donor group called the Donor Forum — assembled to consider ways to support the healing ministry of Christian Science nursing.

January 2016
The Philanthropy Forum

Eventually the Donor Forum was renamed The Philanthropy Forum. When the Philanthropy Forum met in January 2016, they agreed to support the launch of a national benevolence fund to support patients of Christian Science nursing.

January 2016
Fund Working Group

The Philanthropy Forum appointed a committee (the Fund Working Group) in January 2016 to work out the details of the National Fund launch. The Fund Working Group voted unanimously to ask The Principle Foundation to administer the National Fund, and the Foundation whole-heartedly accepted. In June, all responsibility for launching the National Fund was transferred to The Principle Foundation.

April 2017 to today
The Principle Foundation

In April 2017, The Principle Foundation launched the National Fund for Christian Science Nursing (NFCSN) and has been providing grants to Christian Science nursing patients across the US ever since. NFCSN continues to be administered by The Principle Foundation.

NFCSN is a restricted fund within The Principle Foundation organization. Separate policies are in place for the use and administration of this fund. NFCSN is overseen by the same board that governs The Principle Foundation, and NFCSN operations are conducted by The Principle Foundation staff.

NFCSN is an activity of The Principle Foundation, a non-profit organization that serves Christian Scientists. While The Mother Church is a financial contributor to the fund, NFCSN is not an organ of The First Church of Christ, Scientist (The Mother Church) or any of its branches. The Principle Foundation board, staff, and volunteers are members of The Mother Church.
